Tree ID (8/25-8/26)

For your Potpourri project you will be doing some Tree Identification, so let's practice in class!

1. Add page 5-6 to your notebook.
  • In the table of contest, write 5-6 to the left of the margin, and the page title "Potpourri Project & Tree ID" to the right of the margin.
  • Turn to pages 5-6 in your notebook.  Write the page numbers on the appropriate pages, and title the pages "Potpourri Project & Tree ID"
2. Pick one leaf to start with.  You will do the other leaf next.
3. On the LEFT hand side (page 5), write down 5 things you notice about the leaf.  Use your senses to help you: sight, touch, smell... (these are observations)
4.  Sketch a picture of the leaf underneath your 5 observations.
5. Now you are going to use your observations to identify the trees.  Click on the links below to open digital versions of Tree Identification booklets, or use the booklets at your table.  Scroll through the booklets until you find the tree that matches your leaf.

6. Write the Common name, and Scientific name for your tree underneath your illustration.
7.  Repeat the above steps for the second leaf
8.  On the RIGHT hand side (page 6) tape in your Potpourri Project rubric (so you won't lose it!) and begin brainstorming for your Potpourri project on page 5. Make sure the options you select add up to 100 points!
